Marbella is a great tourist destination as it does offer a large number of attractions and countless activities to do. In addition to this, only a few minute-drive from Marbella there are interesting places to explore which are part of this resort town’s appeal. Here are some examples.
Ojén (a 20 minute-drive)
Only ten kilometers away from Marbella, the white-washed village of Ojén appears as one of the gems of the Malaga province. Nestled in the mountain range of the Sierra de las Nieves, a Biosphere Reserve, it offers the charm of the many streams and rivers that flow down from the mountains.
Istán (a 20 minute-drive)
Istán is known as the ‘Spring of the Costa del Sol’ for La Concepcion reservoir is in this area, and it supplies water to all the Costa del Sol. In the midst of this earthly paradise there is the village, with abundant fountains, viewpoints and picturesque spots. The church of San Miguel and the Torre Escalante tower are the two most outstanding monuments in Istán.
Mijas (a 25 minute-drive)
If we had to describe a typical white-washed Andalusian village, Mijas would be the perfect prototype. It is a must if you are in the area and is very close to Marbella. The so-called burro taxis (donkey taxis) are one of Mijas’ most exciting tourist attractions. In this village you can visit the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña hermitage (the local patron saint), the Jardines de la Muralla gardens and the panoramic view point from where you can enjoy the views over the whole Costa el Sol and the Mediterranean Sea.
Casares (a 45 minute-drive)
Casares is right by the border between the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga, in one of the most beautiful Andalusian settings within the Malaga province. This white-washed village is located on a hill, in privileged surroundings. Geranium flowers adorn the balconies, the village being located in a rural setting amidst nature’s peace and quietness. Blas Infante, known as the ‘father of Andalusia’, was born in Casares.
Ronda (a 50 minute-drive)
Nobody should leave Marbella without visiting Ronda. This historic charming town is worldwide known for its dramatic deep El Tajo gorge -98 meter high-, and it is considered as one of the most beautiful Andalusian towns. In addition to the gorge bridge, Ronda also has a singular bullring, a bandit museum, and typical streets where you can enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
These are just a few examples of the day trips you can do from Marbella. We can add Estepona and Fuengirola, the two main towns which flank Marbella. However they deserve a separate article.
